He had the smooth American suit-and-tie thing going, which was what we thought Apple had to have in order to interface with the business world and the Capitol EMI world. We liked him, he understood us. A more unlikely match of artists and label you will rarely find -- the dignified, classically influenced, indelibly Afro-American Modern Jazz Quartet and the Beatles' Apple Corps, Ltd.

But Apple in its Rocking '60s heyday was one of the most daringly eclectic labels on the scene, and as the sole jazz act on the roster, the MJQ was given complete artistic freedom, with no electric guitars or period psychedelia apart from the misleading cover art. The program is more or less standard, poised, painstakingly structured, gently swinging MJQ fare, the group's contrapuntal interplay as telepathic as ever.

This album was merely 35 minutes in duration. The second half of this present compilation, Space, does not match the verve and originality of the first. Venus is too spacey, Mars is just OK, the adagio of Concerto de Aranjuez was and remains overdone, and this version is not especially good.

Indeed, the best track of the second half is Here's That Rainy Day, insufficient at the time of the original release to obtain it. However, now that the two recordings are combined and a properly long album results, I do recommend it.

That Apple Records and the Beatles brought the Modern Jazz Quartet to us young hippie rockers must be acknowledged in jazz history. Under the Jasmin Tree alone, or together here, is wonderful music. The first reviewer clearly knows nothing about MJQ. Which is why I have been frustrated over many years not to find the original vinyl album released on cd.

And now that it is out, unfortunately, it an 'import' only at a terrible price! How annoying! I will rush to buy it when it is released at a reasonable cost in the UK or US. The personnel of the MJQ? Where are you from? As a young teen in the early '70s I had never heard anything like it, nor have I since. It was just as magic to me then as all the electric psychedelia I was also listening to at that time, and more beautiful. I would love to hear it again without all the decades of scratches on the vinyl lp, but not at that ridiculous price.

  2. The most distinctive of John Lewis' compositions is the revolving minor-key theme of "Three Little Feelings, Pt. 1" (part of a three-movement suite), while "The Blue Necklace" has a bell going off like that of a cash register, and Milt Jackson is clearly in his element on the gospel-ish "The Jasmin Tree."6/
