Sonny Stitt - Sonny Stitt With The New Yorkers

He stated that he really liked the sound and the CD. Great job i will call on you again thanks you so much. The focus is entirely on Sonny and the other players on the date get a total of about 3 minutes solo time over the entire album.

And this overwhelming emphasis on Stitt makes for a tiresome experience. Even though he switches from tenor to alto, and on 4 occasions within a track, it is not enough to break the monotony. As usual, Sonny plays with perfect tone on both horns, and easily navigates the toughest bebop licks, and builds totally logical solos over the chord changes.

But there is something missing - no soul or passion. Even the liner notes, in what is embarrassing to read, damn Sonny with faint praise. Here is what to expect from each track. It's not clear that Ray Brown was expecting to solo since Sonny plays over him for the first measure and Ray only plays quarter notes as if he were still backing up the quartet.

If I Had You - start on alto, one chorus of piano, then finish on tenor Alone Together - start on tenor, 2 measures! A lot of miking problems on this one. And there you have it. Should you buy it?

Yes, but put it in a shuffle where you can be blown away by Stitt's virtuosity without being numbed by his oft mechanical performance. The performance was great Loved it. See all 12 customer reviews.
