Generally, Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier composed the music while Eddie Holland wrote the lyrics and provided arrangements. And so it would have been understandable that when the talented trio elected to cut ties with Berry Gordy, Jr.

But trouble did finally surface in — a dispute over royalties and a better share of the profits. The tactic failed to persuade Berry, and so Holland- Dozier and Holland simply moved on. Presented below is a discography of some pre-Motown releases performed or composed or both by HDH — either in collaboration or solo — some charting singles by musicians outside the Motown stable, and then the post Motown run when the three formed the Invictus and Hot Wax record labels, generally working as song writers and producers and occasionally stepping up to the microphone.

Their legal feud would continue for years — all the way into before finally coming to an end. Sadly, there would arise a dispute among the trio when Invictus Records issued a lawsuit against Lamont Dozier who had broken away to enter into a recording solo career. You would suppose that a move such as departing the Motown machine — would lead to — if not a significant decline in success — then an outright bottoming out from the glory years.

But Holland-Dozier-Holland would continue to make their mark. Al through the years following the Motown departure — artists would continue to record their classics and take them to lofty positions on the charts. But in the end — Lamont, Eddie and Brian would make amends — and they would look back on their warfare with Berry Gordy, Jr. Columbia — O. Warner Bros. United Artists — Z. Atlantic — The J. MC Motown Country — E. We will probably never really come to know the stories behind those early labels, so obscure, lost to time.

The recording industry was a tough business to crack. The never ending search for talent and for songs, the costs of production and the do-or-die requirement to secure distribution channels nationally.
