He was in a white group called the Temptones that was mightily influenced by the Temptations. Ruffin and Kendrick were in the group at the time. To Hall, hanging out with the Temptations was an unforgettable thrill.
They were a major influence on my style. I would have loved to be in the group. If they would have let a young white kid join, I would have done it. Ruffin was kicked out of the Temptations in and has had just isolated periods of solo success ever since.
Motivated by a need for money to pay the Internal Revenue Service, Kendrick left the group in , hoping for bigger earnings as a solo artist. In , Ruffin and Kendrick patched up differences with the Temptations and spent six months on a reunion tour with the current members. The tour was longer than the two guest stars expected. We had 30 days off in the six months. The tour was such a big hit that there was talk that Ruffin and Kendrick might rejoin as permanent members.
